The Environmental Department of the Ninilchik Tribe participates in resource stewardship through many aspects of the program. This includes the evaluation of current conditions and the identification of sites that have potential impact to the tribe. The department strives to work cooperatively with regional EPA staff, ADEC, and with remediation workers within the jurisdiction of the tribal boundaries. The quality of air in the local community has been a concern identified by many people. The use of fuel, coal, and wood as fuels contribute to air problems. This is associated with other particulates such as dust that contributes too. The program is evaluating the contributing factors associated with these forms of pollution through the EPA region 10 IGAP program. This baseline information will help us to identify areas of concern that are affect air quality. Development of the baseline information will provide a better understanding of local air quality and the issues that contribute to the discrete properties of the area. The quality and quantity of water resources is a priority for everyone. Determining the condition of the watershed and the identifying point source or non-point source contaminates located in the sub-basins is one of the directives of the program. Several grab samples and limited geophysical regiments have been performed to address the concerns of the local community. This program is currently developing baseline information for the Ninilchik and Deep Creek watersheds through the EPA region 10 IGAP program. The Program has Geographic Information System (GIS) capability that is constantly updated to monitor, identify, and document changing conditions associated with the tribe. This database is also used to document and monitor areas of concern, field work, and the relative conditions in the environment and community. |
