Alaska is the only state to have this program. CHA's receive specific training and in reality, become an extension of the Indian Health Service doctor in the village. CHA's see patients, do patient exams, make assessments and report to the doctor for treatment. Indian Health Services beneficiaries are eligible. The CHS Program stresses disaster preparedness, health and safety awareness and injury prevention. Red Cross First Aid and CPR classes are offered to the community. Licensed Behavioral Health Clinician, Behavioral Health Aide, and Youth Alcohol Prevention Program Coordinator provide comprehensive services to the Ninilchik community for a variety of issues, including coping with life's problems and mental health and substance abuse concerns, treatment, and prevention. We provide assessments, outpatient counseling for adults, children/ adolescents, couples, families and groups, aftercare, education, and assistance in obtaining other needed services. The Mid-Level and Nursing Programs are relatively new and provide the part-time services of a Physician's Assistant and a Registered Nurse Practitioner at the Clinic. Part-time hours are staggered so as many services as possible can be offered.
The Ninilchik Traditional Council has subcontracted with a private doctor to cover his charges for normal childbirth deliveries at the Central Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna. Requirements are: NTC Pharmacy contracts have been set up in Soldotna with Fred Meyer Pharmacy, and in Homer with Ulmer's Drug and Hardware. The contracts provide up to 30 days supply of urgent medications prescribed only through the Ninilchik Community Clinic at a 25% cost to the IHS beneficiary. Routine medications are handled through ANMC. In May of 2000, the Ninilchik Community Clinic increased its medical capabilities through the addition of an on-site X-ray unit. Minimal lab services are provided at the Clinic also, but many lab tests must still be conducted or read at off-site locations. On-site eye clinics are provided on a twice annually basis, with the cooperation of the Southcentral Foundation Eye Clinic. Charges for services are income based. Very little is available in Dental monies from the Indian Health Service, so preventive and urgent care for eligible children is currently available on an annual basis. Promotes prevention of Diabetes through, public education, Walker's Club, nutritional education including Nutritionist visit, Community Exercise Program and database of Diabetes to identify high risk patients. The Clinic's medical billing office issues invoices to private insurances, Medicaid, Denali Kidcare and Veteran's Administration and receives private patient payments and sets up payment plans. ![]() Provided through the Alaska Federal Health Care Access Network Project (AFHCAN), equipment and training are being made available to our Clinic to allow us to be an active partner in the Telemedicine/Telehealth Program.
